Seneca Museum at the WCNY Towpath Tales and Travel

On Saturday May 10th the Seneca Museum was represented at the annual WCNY Towpath Tales and Travel, held at the Broadcast and Education Center located in Syracuse, this was the first year that the museum took part. Attendees learnt about Central New York’s canal sites with representatives from several museums, trail and recreational organizations.

Jennifer Cole, along with Chris Podzuweit, manned the Seneca Museum table at the Towpath Tales and Travel event at the WCNY Towpath Tales and Travel event on Saturday May 10th

The museum brought along a very small selection of items from their collection. Items included, stereoscopic viewer, lock model, 1895 World globe, Westcott rulers, Seneca Knitting and the Magic corn husker. It gave attendees a small taste of what we offer and have at the museum.

Other participating canal sites at the event included Camillus Erie Canal Park and Sims Store Museum, Canastota Canal Town Museum, Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum, the Erie Canal Museum and H. Lee White Maritime Museum.Apart from sharing information with the attendees it also was a greaDan-Ward (Center from the Erie Canalway Museum) talks to staff from the H. Lee White Marine Museumt opportunity to meet, discuss and exchange ideas, program information and talk about the day to day running with other museum and organizations.

We also met Dorothy Stacy, author of the children’s series of canal books called the “Canal Cousins”, which the museum ranges. In the afternoon, Author Richard Reisem discussed the contributions of Myron Holley, Superintendent of Construction of the Erie Canal and founder of the anti-slavery Liberty Party. Erie Canalway Museum staff got into the spirit and dressed the part

In conjunction with this free event, WCNY will be broadcasting its award-winning canal documentary, “Dream Destinations: New York’s Contemporary Canals” at 7 p.m. May 11 on WCNY and at 8 p.m. May 12 on World. WCNY will also begin airing a series of canal vignettes that weekend.

We definitely plan on returning next year and thank WCNY for the opportunity to participate.
