| “End of Program Wrap Up” - The children where presented with a gingerbread house (courtesy of Judy Pipher) and a range of candies, and set about decorating them. The theme of the decorations was early Seneca Falls, afterwards the children played a “Jeopardy” style game that highlighted everything the children had been shown over the last 5 months. | June 02, 2010 - “Farm Implements & Tools” - The children watched a video called “Harvesting the tree”, afterwards they were shown a range of old tools (a wooden plane, cross cut band saw, hand awl and a drill press), shown how they were used and then each child had a chance to try them all. Following on from the last program the children where introduced to pen, nibs and ink. After practicing and getting use to the pens, the children were then given a postcard to write on and address, so they could be sent through the mail. |
| Another field trip and this time the children went to the Seneca Falls historical printing press on Fall Street The principles of printing, typesetting and proofing where all explained and all the children received a card that was printed on the old printing press. The story of Amelia Bloomer and “The Lily” newspaper where also highlighted. Afterwards the children walked to the Women’s Rights National Historical Park where they where introduced to the women’s rights movement, its importance and main participants. |


“Continuing with the “Life & Work in Early Seneca Falls” program with the children from Mynderse Academy, May 13th saw us venture out on our first field trip. Travelling to locks 2/3, the children where shown first hand how the locks work and why. They got to see the gates opening and where given a wonderful insight to the value, usage and operation of this lock system. Afterwards they were all treated to a tour of the Seneca PowerStation, showing them another important and valuable usage of water. All the children then walked back to the Seneca Museum for snacks and a discussion on what they had seen and learnt. A field trip enjoyed by all. |

April 27, 2010 -
Tonight David Hanna presented an interactive program for aspiring authors and other interested people who wanted to know and experience the process involved in being a historical writer. Sharing his experience from barebones to finished product, Professor Hanna gave a historical overview of his latest book “Rights,Railroads,Religion” and afterwards, Professor Hanna gave a book signing. |
| April 10, 2010 - Today we saw the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Boaters Amenities on the Canal level of the Seneca Museum. In attendance was Peter Same (Town Supervisor) and Carmella Mantello (Canal Director) and other town and village dignitaries. This area caters for boater visitors to Seneca Falls with shower, laundry and bathroom facilities also the harbor attendant will also be stationed there. While the new amenities where being created the Seneca Museum also updated and upgraded the displays and hand on sections of the museum. |
| March 24, 2010 - The Mynderse Elementary School Surge Program children came to the museum this time to understand how children of the era made their own fun and how to MAKE items of entertainment using commonly found items that would have cost very little or could be just found around. From ‘Gut Buckets’ to ‘Comb Kazoos’ to ‘Water Harps’ the children made and played them all, with many interesting sounds being produced. The children where placed into two groups and taking the instruments they made, played the “Erie Canal Song”, with amazing success. “ |
March 17, 2010 - Thanks to the Nelson B Delavan Foundation grant we continued the “Life & Work in Early Seneca Falls” educational program, in conjunction with Mynderse Elementary School Surge Program. The children came to the museum and enjoyed a series of activities that took our initial program of “What is a canal and how does it work” further. With a short film and discussion with Dan Ward from The Erie Canal Museum followed by a “Canal Bingo” game. “ |
